Abstract
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the results of additional extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL) in our hospital after ESWL failure in other hospital.

Materials and Methods: Between January 2001 and September 2006, 56 patients with renal or ureteral stones received treatments using EDAP LT02¢ç lithotripter or Sonolith praktis¢ç. The location and size of the stones, the number of session, and the success rate were analyzed. The definition of successful treatment was complete destruction or residual fragments below 2mm in the case of renal stone.

Results: Of the 56 cases, there were 14 (25%), 23 (41%), 5 (9%) and 14 (25%) cases of renal stones (RS), upper ureteral stones (UUS), mid ureteral stones (MUS), lower ureteral stones (LUS) respectively. The total success rate was 70% (39/56), with success rates of 100%, 70%, 57% and 20% for LUS, UUS, RS and MUS respectively. No significant difference of size between success and failure was observed (p>0.05).

Conclusions: The results showed that our hospital¡¯s ESWL outcome was highly about 70% success rate despite of failure in other hospitals.
